Question of the Day

The first in a series of bests relating to music:

In order, who do you believe rank as the best three guitarists in the last 100 years of music?

Note: Besides me.

Note: And the "In order" part matters. Tate, none of this, "I'm not a list person," business.

1. Eric Clapton - so much soul from a white guy in England...

2. Robert Plant - sold his soul to the devil or not, Whole Lotta Love is a study on soloing

3. Jimi - No one did so much for music in so short a span - he only recorded music for four years, yet remains a legend.

We will only point this out once...

Robert Plant was the singer in Led Zeppelin.

Jimmy Page was the guitarist.

Next time I will not be so kind.

Ok...in order!

The #1 guitar player of all time:

Jimi Hendrix

The #2 guitar player of all time according to me:

Eric Clapton
(I saw Eric perform during the summer 0f 2004...he is incredible)

The #3 guitar player(s) of all time:

Stevie Ray Vaughn
Phil Keaggey

For another discussion is the guitar/vocalist relationship and I would give the nod to Page/Plant in a hearbeat. As to Jame's nominating Robert Plant. I am a bit shocked but....can't say I have not made a fool of myself in the blog world at least once or twice...but that was a pretty big error. The High Cheese was very kind to James on this matter. Maybe he should give his "Breaker" jersey back....I mean that was opportunity!

what I really wanted to write:

I have never heard the ol' blues players....David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) is one of my favorites but not even close to the "best". Eric Clapton is such a classic how can you not include him??
Going out of the rock arena we have Esteban...yes, the guy on TV that sells guitars...he is excellent. I don't think there is a question as to Hendrix being the best...just listen to his version of the Star Spangled Banner from Woodstock. As to Adam Hill...yes one of my favorite guitar players but not one of the best. But he plays with passion and leaves it all out there....what more can you ask for...

in order, the correct answers are:

1. Jimmy Page - Flawless, Versatile, Innovative.

2. Stevie Ray Vaughn - Like Eric or BB, only better.

3. Chet Atkins - Not only is he smooth as silk, and innovative beyond belief, he also taught Eddie Van Halen (#5 on the list) how to play. Not bad.

You probably see that Jimi Hendrix ins not on my top three list. I base this on the same principal (it's the principalities involved, smokey...) that I have demoted Dizzy Gillespie on my trumpeters list. Although he is counter-pop and innovative, his own stuf is not that technically incredible. He playes with as much feel and soul as anyone, but actually does strike out as often as he hits a homerun. Result: #4.

Thanks for voting.

Did I misunderstand the question? Was it "Who is the best electric blues/rock guitar player?" or "Who's your favorite guitar player?" To be an impressive guitar player in my book, you've got to be great on the acoustic. You can be great and play both (i.e. play both great). And you can be an impressive musician for your soul and expression and just play electric. But you can't be one of the best guitarists unless you play the guitar (i.e. the "acoustic").

Alright, enough guitar preaching. Nope, I lied. One more opinion before I give my list. Unless the question is "Who is the most important or influential guitarist?", I think you have to go with current players.

Alright, now for a few people you've never heard of:
1. Bryan Sutton
2. Tony Rice
3. Segovia (even though I'm not a big classical guitar fan).
p.s. Thank you Cheese for the brief moment of sanity with Chet Atkins (who could play both greatly). And I've got Gerry Hogan at a distant fourth.

Right on, Chips! I was thinking Segovia. La Golondrina is awesome. He makes 1 guitar sound like three. And Jimi - yea - his Star Spangled Banner. Man - why did you have to leave us so soon. I don't know who to say for 3 - I guess Chet Atkins. (But somehow the technical is there but not the passion.)

1. Phil Keaggy, according to Jimmy Hendrix. Plus, he's missing a finger!

2. Jimmy Oleander of country's Diamond Rio ... just listen, you 'll hear it. I hate country with a fiery passion but he's way too talented to be left off any list.

3. Eddie Van Halen. Finger tapping, fan-picking, Eruption, a sound sought to be copied by all hard rock players since.

4. Myself ... especially the solo for the hit entitled, Michael.
